[VIDEO] Have the Courage to Change the Things You Can Control

When we have the courage to change the things we can control, we begin to close doors that hold us back. It takes courage to believe in yourself, to walk away from something you no longer love.

In my life, I have gone through a lot of big changes. I closed my career of 23 years as a web designer. Fully committed to helping other gay men (and our allies) heal through spiritual awakening.

It’s taken so much courage to believe that I could walk away from that career. I always got pulled in two directions. On one hand, I would tell myself I would have to do the web design because it paid the bills.

On the other hand, I have this new career that calls me to be in service to help others overcome their fears and limiting beliefs. And then, getting torn between the two, again and again.

As soon as I finally had an experience that was the last straw, I knew I finally had to have the courage to change the things I could control.

Not having the courage or strength to change, I would constantly get myself pulled back into doing web design work for other people. Even though I kept telling myself I didn’t want to do it anymore.

Every time I kept working on the web design, I wouldn’t be working on the coaching or breathwork. And I felt myself getting pulled further away from joy, stuck in my routine. Uninspired and unmotivated to grow.

Have the Courage to Change—You ARE Worth It!

It’s very easy to get caught up in what is familiar. Even if it doesn’t feel good or bring us joy and happiness. It’s familiar, it’s routine.

And it’s very easy to get stuck in those patterns. Because they’re familiar, they’re safe, they’re in our comfort zone.

Having the courage to change means being willing to step out of your comfort zone. Sometimes you just have to take a deep breath, slow down, and surrender.

Surrender to what wants to come up. And, it may push you out of your comfort zone. It may give you fear. It may challenge you.

Or, maybe you get those monkey mind thoughts going in your head that say, “I can’t do this. I’m not good enough. I’m an imposter. No one is going to like me. No one is going to believe me.”

Those thoughts, negative thoughts, come from within. And if they get reflected back to me from others, it’s because that’s what I am projecting out.

It’s taken a lot of internal work to go in and let go of those negative beliefs.

Have the Courage to Change the Things You Can Control

What’s it Gonna Take to Have the Courage to Change the Things You Can Control?

To have the courage to change the things you can control, you have to be conscious of your thoughts, be aware, and take a deep breath. Inhale. Exhale.

Focus on your breath. Getting by, moment to moment, day by day. Having the patience, creating space for something new to open up and expand.

Having the courage to change, is the willingness to take small, actionable, baby steps towards whatever your goals, dreams or ideas are that you strive for.

The only way to move through change is to take it step-by-step. Even if they’re just small baby steps.
